The most consumed fuel by medium and large marine engines is heavy fuel oil, commonly known as Bunker Fuel or Fuel Oil. Heavy fuel oil is classified into different types based on two parameters: viscosity at 50℃, measured in cSt, and sulfur content, expressed as mass/mass percentage. Smaller engines, used either as propulsion on smaller vessels or as generators on larger vessels, burn marine gas oil, which by law must have a sulfur content of less than 0.1%.
